the start of the Alaska Highway
The American Army brought the Alaska Highway and its related projects to the Yukon like a circus: setting up tents, showing how the wilderness could be conquered, and then moving on. When the show cleared out it left a rough, winding gravel road connecting a few small communities facing a doubtful future. There was no doubt, however, that the Alaska Highway had a profound impact on people and places in the Yukon Territory.
